About this deal

The cherry on the top of this already very well-written story though was being gifted with a glimpse into the world through the eyes of someone who is autistic. De debuutroman Een soort vonk is McNicoll’s reactie, als niemand anders het doet, dan doet ze het zelf wel. Addie is autistic, has a supportive family, a clear sense of her own identity and is alert to injustice. When Scottish author Elle McNicoll was first trying to enter the publishing world, she was repeatedly told that people didn’t want to read about an autistic heroine. As for Benji, not only has his best friend, Amir, moved away, but the comic book holding the clue for locating his dad is also missing.

Those women, who were taken out of their homes and tortured, were different too, just like Addie is.

Reading Addie’s experiences throughout this book were raw, and revealing and felt like reading my own experiences as an autistic person through a magnifying glass.

Na szczęście Addie ma wsparcie u rodziny (w tym także autystycznej starszej siostrze) - oni zawsze stoją po jej stronie. When 11 year old Addie, who is autistic, learns about the 16th century women who were persecuted for witchcraft, she starts to lobby for a local memorial in her small Scottish village. This book also makes you think of how appreciative we, as parents, are for the good teachers we do have.Apart from Lise's offstage death, there is little violence here; like Annemarie, the reader is protected from the full implications of events—but will be caught up in the suspense and menace of several encounters with soldiers and in Annemarie's courageous run as courier on the night of the escape. This story gives a great insight into what it's like to be autistic, but the points are never forced or laboured. The bullying Addie endures will leave readers’ stomachs in sympathetic knots, but Addie’s nuanced relationships with her sisters and a new friend, Audrey, infuse humor and heart. A school history project about witch trials turns into a bit of a crusade for Addie as she identifies with the women who were unjustly targeted for being different.

All in all I feel this book is suppose to bring to light that just because a person is different or "weird" that it doesn't mean they shouldnt be heard by others. Common Sense is the nation's leading nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of all kids and families by providing the trustworthy information, education, and independent voice they need to thrive in the 21st century. A novel which encourages empathy and challenges perceptions by a debut author who is herself neurodivergent.

Yes, there is humour here and tension too but there is also a refreshingly unique and beautiful voice that defies boxing in and invites all non-neuro-divergent readers to re-examine everything that they thought before. She sympathises with the innocent women who lost their lives centuries before, and demonstrates empathy far more than the adults in this text. So when Addie learns that her Scottish village once killed nonconforming women accused of witchcraft, her keen empathy compels her to petition for a memorial. We see that there are regrettably also many ways to ignorant and unpleasant, and that even adults can be bullies. It is the story of Addie Darrow, an eleven-year-old autistic girl living in the village of Juniper, just outside of Edinburgh, who struggles to navigate the complicated world around her, from home to school, where she is often bullied, both by her former friend Jenna and her teacher Ms Murphy. The characters are well-drawn and while I would have liked for this book to be longer, it was shown that everyone had their own struggles and flaws. Rare for most books, this book features more than one autistic character, and the tender relationship between Addie and her older sister Keedie is so touching.
