About this deal

I really enjoyed this book by Jacqueline Wilson. It was intruiging and I couldn't put it down. My favourite character in the whole book was Shirley with her love for books and her eager-to-impress attitude. My favourite places in the book were probably the grounds of the house. They sounded really beautiful and mysterious. As well as winning many awards for her books, including the Children's Book of the Year, Jacqueline is a former Children's Laureate, and in 2008 she was appointed a Dame.

It’s no picnic but it’s a way of keeping yourself going and better than the alternative,” she laughs. Made shortly before the outbreak of the Second World War, it was Fields' last British film. [3] It was shot at Islington Studios with sets designed by Alex Vetchinsky. [4] Cast [ edit ] This is important because generally in high school years we have low self-esteem. We need to keep pushing ourselves to keep going and do our best at everything. Does she ever take a break? “No, I should, and friends and family say, ‘Oh, for goodness sake, just enjoy yourself’. I’ve done it for two or three days occasionally but I feel restless. I know it sounds completely mad but there’s nothing to think about when I’m doing something boring. I would miss writing, terribly, if I didn’t still write books. The stories of people that were evacuated are so extraordinary because some children were desperately unhappy; some sort of jogged along somehow and some kids had the time of their life and didn’t even want to go home.” The author gives a fascinating view of the lives of thousands of children who were evacuated from London to the countryside during WWII. In 1939, the threat of Germany bombing London and other major cities caused the decision to send children to safety in rural areas. When she gets off the train no one wants to take her so a lady is forced to take her and two boys .

Evacuees: another subject that I never get tired of reading about! It's just such an interesting situation, ASKING to be dramatised in fiction really. Kids being whisked away from their parents and randomly slotted into other people's families, adjusting to life in the country after growing up in the city, living with total strangers, overcrowded little country villages rationing and making do, resentment and suspicion, everyone secretly terrified and uncertain because of the war. Shipyard Sally (1939) - Monty Banks - Synopsis, Characteristics, Moods, Themes and Related - AllMovie". AllMovie.I definitely recommend everyone to read it because it was a lovely, heart-felt story. It had everything a good book needed and every chapter left me wanting to read more and more. I would rate it a 9/10 because the only problem with it is the fact you can’t stop reading. You really do get absorbed in a different world. You’re not thinking, ‘Oh God, I feel ill’ or ‘What’s going to happen next?’ It’s a good way of just coping, I suppose. This book made me think about how important it is that we remind ourselves to be bold and stand tall when Shirley said “I put both my thumbs under my chin and pushed upwards. Chin up, Shirley, I commanded”

The characters are fine, they don’t really change at all, it’s all pretty one note. We do learn about them as time goes on but it’s not really anything interesting. Jacqueline is one of the nation’s favourite authors, and her books are loved and cherished by young readers not only in the UK but all over the world. She has sold millions of books and in the UK alone the total now stands at over 35 million!

I found this book really realistic, and it helps if you are learning about evacuees and the second world war. I recommend this book to 8, 9, 10, and 11 year olds. Bored out of his mind and convinced that the British Army’s traditional commando units are not fit for purpose, he and several of his comrades devise a new and radical plan that flies in the face of all previously accepted rules of modern warfare. While living in Meadow Ridge, Mrs. Waverley buys Shirley a white blouse, a bottle green tunic, and brown leather shoes to wear for school, which she does. My favourite character of the book was Shirley. She was very strong, and she always stood up for people. I also like Chubby because even though the children were quite naughty at times, she didn't mind and she didn't punish them badly. Sometimes Chubby was a bit unfair though. Her favourite child was definitely Archie, and everyone knew that. She was always looking after him much more than Shirley and Kevin.
