Thanks to this unique detail, we loved that this board feels comfortable enough to use without shoes. It will also give you an ideal amount of grip without roughing up your floors as much as classic grip tape is likely to do. The URBNFit Wooden Balance Board Trainer is our top choice for a solid, durable board with a classic shape. A textured surface makes it the ideal choice for almost any kind of balance exercise. The benefits aren't limited to surfers though, professional athletes from all sports are discovering instability and balance training workouts. The benefits come from the strengthening of peripheral muscles and forcing your body to use its core to stay balanced. Rather than working one muscle, instability training works a whole range of muscles, even some very small ones that might get ignored, but which are crucial to your sport. INDO BOARD was founded with the mission of bringing the fun and benefits of balance board training to everyone. The INDO BOARD (derived from the word indoor) was designed to be used indoors so that everyone from kids to senior adults to professional athletes could enjoy the benefits of balance training and balance board exercises. According to Leada Malek, PT, a board-certified sports specialist and physical therapist, balance boards can have a positive impact on "balance, coordination, motor skills, and lower extremity muscle strength." And since you can place your hands or feet on them, balance boards can be a great way to make your workout routine more dynamic. When dealing with a roller board, you’ll want to know how far the roller can move in either direction. Most roller boards come equipped with (removable) stoppers that keep the board from rolling off the roller entirely. And sometimes, these stoppers are adjustable. A shorter roller length means a more controlled and more beginner-friendly experience. I’ve found that training using a surf balance board is a great way to stay surf-fit when you can’t get into the ocean. In particular, focused balance board exercises are a great way to improve your balance. Additionally, balance board exercises will help improve your surfing by improving your ankle, knee and glute strength, agility and flexibility. The easiest way to make the roller is from PVC pipe or foam roller. The roller must be proportional to your board if you want the most benefit. If the PVC pipe you’re using is relatively small in circumference, the board you use should be shorter. Balance training is a major part of the workout routines of most serious surfers. Professionals and hobbyists alike, there are two main reasons you want to utilize a balance trainer: improving strength when training & maintaining strength when you can't make it into the water.

Then, we considered the style of each board and which materials they were made out of. We also looked at price, the rolling length, and the tilting angle of the board. Finally, we considered how user-friendly each board was and whether or not it would be good for beginners. When you throw the Whirly Board into the mix, it not only helps you increase the benefits of your standing desk, but it’s a lot more fun. So it’s no wonder more people are buying balance boards for standing desks. The board is adjustable, so you can limit how far the roller moves in any direction. And if you’re looking for a serious challenge, you can even remove the roller’s stops entirely.

I made mine out of plywood and a foam roller. You can probably have the wood cut at the lumber store for free. If you have a saw and drill at home you can add safety guides to the bottom. The safety guides will prevent the board from flying out from underneath you. Using the corners as the safety guides allows you to use the board narrowly and widely across the foam roller (See examples below). It’s easier to use the board wide at first. The more you practice, the more you’ll want to make it more challenging and change your stance to narrow. Here are a few workouts that can be done on an Indo Board that I have found beneficial to my surfing. Set the stoppers to a beginner-friendly width of 11 inches or a more intermediate width of 16 inches. Or remove them entirely for a truly challenging experience. We like that the adjustability makes it easy to scale up the intensity of your workouts as you build confidence and gain experience, allowing you to keep the same balance board for years to come. Balance boards are, of course, good for balance. But some research has shown that they can be great for other things, too, such as coordination and ankle stability.
